Ask parents a year or two in what they wish they'd photographed, and the answers repeat: the newborn curled up exactly like they were in the womb, the gummy first-tooth grin, the wobbly first few steps before walking became boring and automatic. None of these are "developmental milestones" in the clinical sense — some pass in weeks, some can be recreated any time you like, and none of them tell you anything about whether your child is developing on track. They track two different things on purpose. The Developmental Milestone Checklist (based on the CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." program) tracks whether your child is reaching expected developmental skills — smiling, sitting, saying words. This page tracks photographs: the specific shots parents most often say they wish they'd taken before the window closed. A baby can be developing perfectly on the CDC list and still not have a newborn-curl photo, because nobody grabbed the camera in time — that's what this checklist is for.
Where do the age windows on this page come from?
Wherever a matching calculator already exists on our site, we used its numbers rather than writing new ones from memory — the first-tooth window matches our Teething Timeline Calculator, and the sitting, crawling-adjacent, and first-steps windows match our Developmental Milestone Checklist. Where no calculator covers a moment (the newborn-curl photo, crawling, the haircut), we kept the range soft and said so, because the real-world spread between babies is wide.
