What counts as normal in the first weeks
- First 48 hours (breastfed, NHS and UNICEF UK): likely only 2 or 3 wet nappies; the first poo is black and tar-like (meconium).
- By day 3: wet nappies becoming more frequent; poo changing to a lighter, loose, greenish colour.
- From day 4: at least 2 soft, yellow poos a day for a breastfed baby.
- From day 5: at least 6 heavy, wet nappies every 24 hours for a breastfed baby. For a formula-fed baby, the NHS says around 6 wet nappies a day from a few days after the birth, and at least 1 poo a day.
- Feeds: the NHS says newborns tend to breastfeed at least 8 times in 24 hours for the first few weeks.
If output drops below these ranges, your baby is hard to wake for feeds, or you are worried — speak to your midwife, health visitor or pediatrician.

Call your pediatrician if…
- Fewer wet diapers than usual, or fewer than the NHS's at least 6 a day from day 5.
- No poo in the last 24 to 48 hours in a young baby (UNICEF UK's leaflet says to speak to your midwife or health visitor).
- Dry mouth, sunken soft spot, no tears, or unusual sleepiness.
- Persistent vomiting, blood in stool, or any concern that doesn't sit right.
